Perplexity Launches Hybrid Compute for Mac AI Privacy
Perplexity has launched Hybrid Compute, a new feature for its Computer agent on Apple Silicon Macs that splits artificial intelligence tasks between cloud-based models and local models to keep sensitive data secure on the user's device. The tool, which began rolling out on September 1, 2026, is designed for professionals who need to leverage powerful AI while ensuring client confidentiality and data privacy. The system works by starting each task in the cloud, where large frontier models handle research and complex reasoning. An on-device classifier then scans for potentially sensitive information such as names, emails, account numbers, or privileged files.
