Pennsylvania Reports Fifth Measles-Associated Death
Pennsylvania health officials reported Wednesday that an unvaccinated Lancaster County resident who tested positive for measles had died, bringing the state’s reported toll to five measles-associated deaths this year. Officials released no further details about the person or the circumstances of the death. The state said it has recorded 943 confirmed measles cases across 39 counties in 2026. One account reported 176 hospitalizations. The state also recorded 40 new positive cases as of Monday, September 28, according to officials. The case and death figures come from state health department reporting. The latest death follows four others reported in Pennsylvania this year: two infants in Lancaster County, an 18-year-old in Mifflin County and a 40-year-old in Jefferson County. State officials said those four people were unvaccinated; the infants were too young to receive routine vaccination. The Lancaster County coroner said his office did not handle the latest death and that he had not received details from state officials. Pennsylvania’s count has not been reconciled with the federal tally.
