The CDC’s national tally also recorded 3,471 measles cases through September 17. Pennsylvania reported 835 cases and four associated deaths as of September 23, according to state figures. The state and federal case counts cover different periods, and their death totals reflect different counting approaches, so they should not be treated as directly equivalent. The Department of Health and Human Services said a state report listed measles as the underlying cause of the federally counted death and that the National Center for Health Statistics verified it. An HHS spokesperson did not identify the state.
