Oregon’s Dana Altman retires, Stubblefield named interim

Published 7 October 2026

The University of Oregon announced Wednesday that men’s basketball coach Dana Altman, 68, is retiring effective immediately, ending a 16-season tenure in which he became the winningest coach in program history. Assistant Tony Stubblefield will lead the Ducks on an interim basis for the 2026-27 season, and the university said it plans to search for a permanent coach after the season. Altman’s Oregon teams went 382-182 and reached the NCAA Tournament nine times, including the 2017 Final Four. They also won four conference regular-season titles and four conference tournament championships. In a statement released by the university, Altman said leaving was difficult and painful but that he believed it was the right decision at this time. He did not provide a specific reason for retiring. Athletic director Rob Mullens said Stubblefield was suited to lead the team because he had spent much of Altman’s Oregon tenure on the coaching staff and was known and trusted by the players. Stubblefield has worked at Oregon in two stints, including 13 seasons on Altman’s staff, and was DePaul’s head coach from 2021 to 2024 before returning to Eugene in 2024.
