ESPN analyst Chris Spatola dies suddenly at age 47

Chris Spatola, an ESPN college basketball analyst, former Army player and assistant coach under Mike Krzyzewski at Duke, has died at age 47, the network announced Tuesday. Spatola joined ESPN in 2015 and provided analysis during game and studio productions, and also worked as a host on SiriusXM radio. ESPN praised his contributions to its coverage in a statement. "Chris Spatola brought a unique perspective to ESPN's college basketball coverage, shaped by his experiences as a student-athlete, Army veteran, coach and broadcaster," the network said. "He was thoughtful, prepared and passionate about the sport, earning the respect of colleagues, coaches, players and fans alike. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones during this difficult time." The cause of death was not disclosed, and one report described the passing as unexpected with the cause unknown at the time of publication. Spatola was a four-year starter at West Point from 1998 to 2002, leading Army in scoring in three of his four seasons and finishing with 1,543 career points, ranking among the program's top 10 all-time scorers.
