OpenAI claims Navier-Stokes solution, origin disputed
OpenAI has announced that its artificial intelligence models have achieved a solution to the Navier-Stokes problem, a complex mathematical puzzle that has remained unsolved for nearly a century. The company stated that approximately 10,000 AI agents worked concurrently on the Millennium Prize Problem, reaching a purported solution in 88 hours after an effort that cost millions of dollars in computing power. The Navier-Stokes equations are fundamental to understanding fluid dynamics, describing the behavior of liquids and gases, and the problem posed by the Clay Mathematics Institute asks whether these equations can break down under certain conditions. OpenAI's claim has ignited controversy within the mathematical community. Mathematicians Tristan Buckmaster of New York University and Levent Alpöge, who works at rival AI firm Anthropic, have raised concerns about the origin of OpenAI's solution. Buckmaster stated that he and Alpöge had been developing their own solution using AI tools, including OpenAI's Codex system, and that OpenAI may have accelerated its efforts after learning of their progress.
