OpenAI claims three AI results in math, computing and physics
OpenAI says its AI models produced three results in mathematics, computer science and physics, including claims that they proved longstanding conjectures and established the existence of certain quantum field theories. The company has published mathematical and computing materials for examination, while an external physics group is preparing its own account before releasing that work. None of the three claims has been independently verified in the reporting. In mathematics, OpenAI says its models proved the local smoothing conjecture in every spatial dimension. Proposed by Christopher Sogge in 1991, the problem concerns how waves concentrate over time. The company says the proof also settles the Kakeya and Stein restriction conjectures. It has made a written proof and a Lean formalization, a computer-checkable proof, available on GitHub. The computing result is a claimed refutation of the Exponential Time Hypothesis, or ETH, which concerns the difficulty of solving Boolean satisfiability problems. Researchers have used the hypothesis in work across areas including graph theory, computational biology, databases and computational geometry. OpenAI says its models produced a...
