OpenAI adds reusable cloud environments to Codex

OpenAI announced reusable cloud development environments for its Codex coding agent at its DevDay conference, giving developers a saved project setup they can use to resume work across devices. The company says the environments are intended to reduce repeated preparation and let teams share approved configurations while keeping individual tasks separate. Developers connect a GitHub repository, after which Codex examines the project and prepares its dependencies and startup checks, according to OpenAI’s product description. Once an environment is published, each task launched from it runs in its own virtual machine. Work can continue while a developer’s computer is off, and unfinished changes remain with the task so it can be reopened from another device. OpenAI says colleagues can use a shared environment through a ChatGPT workspace, but sharing the setup does not give them access to one another’s tasks or permission to change the configuration. Enterprise administrators control editing access separately. The arrangement is designed to standardize project setups without combining users’ work or permissions.
