OPay Denies Shutdown Rumor, Pursues Legal Action

OPay, a leading Nigerian fintech company, has reaffirmed its commitment to continuing operations in the country and announced it is pursuing legal action against those responsible for circulating a false message claiming the company would shut down. The company held a live town hall and press conference in Lagos on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, to address the misinformation, which had spread on social media platforms. The false message, which circulated online starting August 31, alleged that OPay would cease operations from September 1 and urged customers to withdraw their funds. OPay's Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer, Dotun Adekunle, stated that the claim was unequivocally false. "OPay is here. OPay is operating, and OPay is going nowhere. The message that is circulating online is false. It did not come from OPay," he said. Adekunle pointed out that the company remained fully operational on September 2, the day after the alleged shutdown was supposed to occur. The company confirmed that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has acknowledged the circulating message as fake news.
