Ontario agencies show "Lake America" after U.S. mapping update

Several Ontario government agencies briefly displayed the name "Lake America" on their websites over the weekend, following a mapping service update triggered by a United States executive order. The incident highlighted the reliance of Canadian public institutions on American digital infrastructure and sparked a debate about digital sovereignty. The change originated from an executive order signed by U.S. President Donald Trump on August 27, 2026. The order directed the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America in federal usage. The U.S. Geological Survey subsequently updated its Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) database. Google Maps, which sources its place names from official government registers, implemented the change for users in the United States. Canadians continued to see "Lake Ontario," while users elsewhere saw both names. Ontario's public agencies, including Hydro One, Metrolinx, Infrastructure Ontario, and the LCBO, draw their mapping data from Google. Consequently, their websites and services automatically reflected the name change for a period.
