Onimusha Way of the Sword Review: Combat Praised, Story Noted
Capcom's Onimusha Way of the Sword, the first new entry in the series in two decades, is set to launch on September 4, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The action-adventure game, developed and published by Capcom, marks a significant modernization of the franchise's classic formula, centering on a revamped combat system and the historical figure of Miyamoto Musashi. The game's narrative follows the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, whose likeness is based on actor Toshiro Mifune. After a duel with Seijuro Yoshioka in Kyoto, Musashi is killed by the Genma, a demonic race, but is resurrected in hell with an Oni Gauntlet. Guided by the guardian Ono no Takamura, Musashi ventures back into Kyoto to purify the city's Malice and defeat the Genma. While the story is described as not particularly brilliant or memorable, it features some hard-hitting sequences and balances Musashi's characterization between goofiness and determination. The game incorporates Japanese folklore and historical figures, though some critics note it does not fully explore the interesting historical setting of the early Tokugawa Shogunate.
