Oklahoma Beats No. 1 Texas 27-24 on Late Field Goal
Oklahoma defeated top-ranked Texas 27-24 in the Red River Rivalry on October 10, winning on a late field goal after the Longhorns rallied to tie the game. The loss was Texas’ first of the season, while Oklahoma claimed the rivalry victory at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Texas took an early lead when quarterback Arch Manning connected with Cam Coleman for a 41-yard touchdown. The Longhorns were ahead 17-7 at halftime, according to one account, but Oklahoma mounted a second-half comeback. A blocked punt helped the Sooners score, and a touchdown drive early in the fourth quarter brought them closer. Oklahoma took a 24-17 lead after safety Peyton Bowen intercepted Manning and returned the ball for a touchdown. Texas answered with a scoring drive capped by Manning’s touchdown pass to Jermain Bishop Jr., tying the game. The Longhorns later missed a field goal with less than three minutes remaining, giving Oklahoma another opportunity. After a subsequent possession ended without a score, Manning threw another interception with less than a minute to play. Oklahoma advanced into field-goal range, and Tate Sandell made the kick that decided the game.
