Norah O’Donnell is returning to CBS Mornings as a cohost, reuniting with Gayle King and Nate Burleson starting September 8. The move marks a homecoming for O’Donnell, who previously co-anchored the network’s morning program from 2012 to 2019 before departing to lead the CBS Evening News. CBS News executives announced the change on September 3, describing it as a strategic effort to stabilize the program’s ratings and inject new energy into the broadcast. O’Donnell will join the anchor desk as the show ramps up its political coverage ahead of the midterm elections. Her appointment is part of a broader reshuffling of the network’s anchor lineup under the leadership of CBS News chief Bari Weiss. “This is a homecoming for Norah,” said Jon Tower, executive producer of CBS Mornings, in a memo to staff. “For seven years, Norah helped lead CBS This Morning alongside Gayle, creating one of the most memorable partnerships in the history of morning news.” Tower added that O’Donnell’s extensive experience, including her work as a correspondent on 60 Minutes and her new women’s health podcast, makes her a “perfect match” for King and Burleson.
