Nintendo Ties 30 Percent Sale to $300 Million Tariff Refund

Nintendo of America has announced a rare Customer Appreciation Sale, offering 30 percent off dozens of digital Nintendo Switch games and bundles from September 13 through September 26, along with unspecified discounts on select physical games, downloadable content, accessories, amiibo and apparel at Nintendo stores, the Nintendo eShop and participating retailers. In its announcement, the company said the promotion is its way of thanking players for their continued support and is made possible in part by tariff-related refunds, noting that it absorbed most tariff-related costs while the refunds helped make such promotions possible. The sale comes after Nintendo recognized approximately $300 million in tariff refunds in its June quarter, recorded as a reduction in cost of sales. The benefit was substantial: gross margin rose 22 percentage points year over year to 54.3 percent, and operating profit climbed 150.5 percent to 142.5 billion yen even as net sales fell 9.5 percent to 517.8 billion yen. Digital sales rose 90 percent to 132.7 billion yen, while Switch 2 hardware units fell 34.4 percent to 3.82 million against the prior launch quarter.
