Netflix Sets Ray Gunn Theatrical and Streaming Dates

Netflix has released the first trailer for Ray Gunn, Brad Bird’s animated science-fiction detective film, and announced that it is scheduled to open in select theaters on December 4, 2026, before beginning to stream on Netflix on December 18. Some theatrical screenings are planned for 70mm, according to the release information. The dates are future plans, not completed releases. The film is set in Metropia, a gigantic city in an alternate future imagined from a 1939 perspective. Its official synopsis describes private investigator Raymond Gunn as being drawn into a case involving aliens, murder and Venus Nova, a multimedia star. Sam Rockwell voices Gunn, while Scarlett Johansson voices Nova. Directed by Bird, Ray Gunn combines science-fiction elements with the conventions of classic detective stories. The voice cast also includes Tom Waits, Alan Tudyk, Matt Berry, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Chernus, Kether Donohue, Michelle Rodriguez, Aasif Mandvi, Matt Jones, Kathryn Hunter, John Ratzenberger, Justin Peck and Patton Oswalt. The film is a Netflix and Skydance Animation production. Bird has said the project had been in his mind for more than 30 years.
