Netflix Outer Banks prequel in development as finale airs

Netflix is developing a prequel series to its hit teen drama "Outer Banks," set to explore the origins of the fictional island's deep social divide two decades before the events of the original show. The project, currently referred to as "Kildare," is in early development with the streaming giant and the show's original creators, Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke. The announcement comes just as the fifth and final season of "Outer Banks" is set to premiere on Netflix on August 20, 2026. According to the creators, the prequel has been in the works for some time but has only now entered formal development as the main series concludes. The new series will delve into the history of Kildare Island, specifically how the rift between the working-class Pogues and the wealthy Kooks began. "We're working on the script. We're working hard on it with our awesome partners from Netflix, and we're just trying to get all of it as good as it can be," creator Josh Pate said. He explained that the prequel will focus on the parents' generation of the current characters, revealing the story behind the island's split.
