Nepal Seeks Climate Justice After Deadly Glacier Flood

A catastrophic glacier collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26 unleashed a devastating torrent of ice, rock, mud, and water, causing widespread destruction in downstream valleys and leading Nepal to appeal to the international community for climate justice and compensation. The disaster resulted in over 1,300 confirmed deaths and more than 5,000 people missing, with preliminary estimates of property, housing, and infrastructure losses in Nepal reaching approximately $2.56 billion. The event also significantly impacted energy infrastructure, affecting about 431 megawatts of operating generation capacity, including hydropower and solar facilities, as well as damaging projects under construction. In response, Nepal's government sent a letter to the United Nations Loss and Damage Fund on September 1, seeking support for the disaster's impacts. Officials have framed the appeal as a matter of climate justice, emphasizing Nepal's minimal contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions-less than 0.1 percent-and its high vulnerability to climate change due to its geography in the Himalayas.
