Momodu Questions Tinubu’s Influence Ahead of 2027 Election

Published 15 October 2026

African Democratic Congress chieftain Dele Momodu criticized President Bola Tinubu’s political influence and questioned the impartiality of Nigeria’s electoral commission, while predicting that Peter Obi could pose a serious challenge to Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election. His comments were made in a television interview on Wednesday, October 14, according to reports published the following day. Momodu alleged that Tinubu had appointed too many people from the Yoruba region to the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, and said this could undermine confidence in the 2027 election. He presented the appointments as part of a plan to make the election unfair. The supplied reports do not provide independent evidence supporting the allegation. Momodu also compared Tinubu’s political influence with that of the late military ruler Sani Abacha, saying the president had effectively taken over the executive, legislature and judiciary. In another claim during the interview, he said governors, judges and lawmakers were afraid to challenge Tinubu. The reports provide no independent evidence for that assertion.
