Modi’s Chennai Visit to Feature Metro Opening, ₹13,000 Crore Projects
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Chennai on October 11 to inaugurate a new stretch of the city’s Phase II metro network and announce development projects valued at more than ₹13,000 crore, according to the Prime Minister’s Office. The planned itinerary includes inaugurations, project dedications and foundation-stone ceremonies across transport, ports, petroleum and research. The main event is the planned opening of the 14.64-kilometre Poonamallee Bypass-Vadapalani section, built at a reported cost of ₹4,900 crore. The Chennai Metro Rail Corporation has completed testing and received approvals for commercial operations following an inspection by railway safety officials, according to a report on the project. The stretch has 11 elevated stations and is the first Phase II segment to receive operational clearance. Modi is scheduled to ride the metro with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. The segment forms part of the 26-kilometre Lighthouse-Poonamallee corridor, itself within Chennai Metro’s larger Phase II expansion.
