Modi meets global chip CEOs to boost India semiconductor push

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with chief executives from major global semiconductor companies on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, to promote India's chip industry and the second phase of the India Semiconductor Mission. The meeting, held ahead of the Semicon India 2026 conference, brought together leaders from firms including Micron, Intel, AMD, Foxconn, Tata Electronics, Applied Materials, ASML, and others. Modi assured the industry of a predictable and responsive policy environment and invited suggestions on policy measures, according to a government statement. The CEOs expressed confidence in opportunities under the India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 and in India's potential to build capabilities across the semiconductor value chain, including manufacturing, research and development, advanced technologies, and supporting industries. The second phase of the India Semiconductor Mission is backed by an outlay of 1.27 lakh crore rupees. The government has also pledged a further 1.9 trillion rupees, or approximately US$19.8 billion, in subsidies to boost local chip and electronics production, a commitment made two months prior to the conference.
