Altman argues scarce DRAM belongs in data centers

Published 31 October 2026

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman argued on the Cheeky Pint podcast that scarce DRAM should be allocated to cloud data centers rather than held in personal computers, saying PCs use their memory only about 5% of the time. His remarks present an allocation argument during a memory-supply squeeze, not an announced company policy or product plan. Altman said that when supply is constrained, cloud systems should maximize memory utilization. He described the amount of DRAM sitting in individual computers as a poor use of limited global supply. The estimate that personal computers use memory about 5% of the time was his claim; the reports did not provide an independent measurement supporting it. The proposal puts two uses of computing memory in tension: pooled capacity in data centers, where AI services run, and locally installed memory that people use for personal computing. A shift toward centralized computing could favor large cloud buyers, while users would have less capacity available on their own devices. Altman’s remarks did not include a timeline, purchasing arrangement or specific plan to move memory out of consumer computers. Altman also addressed why memory producers may...
