Microsoft patent outlines ads at breaks in gameplay

Published 24 September 2026

Microsoft has filed a patent application describing a system that could pause video games to show promotional content at selected breaks, with players earning credits toward more playtime by watching. The filing outlines a possible approach, not a confirmed plan to add ads to Xbox or other Microsoft games. The application, titled “Contextually Aware Management of Interactive Software Application Access,” was published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on September 3, 2026. It describes using gameplay events or signals to identify moments when a pause may be less disruptive than an interruption during active play. Examples include loading screens, the end of a round or cutscene, a completed quest, and defeating an opponent. Under the proposal, the game could be paused while an advertisement or other promotional material plays. Afterward, a player could receive a credit allowing continued access for a set period or until reaching a gameplay milestone. The application gives examples of time-based credits lasting 15 minutes, 30 minutes or an hour, and describes alternatives tied to progress, such as completing a level or several matches.
