Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Update Adds 8-Player Local Multiplayer on Switch 2

A free update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, released on September 1, 2026, has introduced a significant expansion to local multiplayer and enhanced performance for the Nintendo Switch 2 console. The update, version 4.0.0, allows up to eight players to compete simultaneously on a single system, doubling the previous local multiplayer limit. This new eight-player capability requires the Nintendo Switch 2 and a sufficient number of compatible controllers, with at least one JoyCon 2 or Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller needed to enable the feature. The update also brings improved visuals, taking better advantage of the Switch 2's hardware for clearer graphics on high-resolution televisions. Loading times before races and battles have been reduced on the newer console, thanks to its enhanced processing power. In addition to the expanded multiplayer and performance boosts, the update adds CameraPlay support for the Switch 2. This feature allows players to display their face via a connected USB camera during online play within GameChat sessions or in local multiplayer races for two to four players, mirroring a similar function available in Mario Kart World.
