LNG Canada partners approve Phase 2 expansion

LNG Canada and its partners have made a final investment decision to proceed with Phase 2 of the Kitimat, British Columbia, export terminal, a planned expansion that would double its annual capacity from 14 million to 28 million tonnes. The project remains to be built, and its projected output and operating date are not yet realized. The expansion is to add two liquefaction trains, bringing the terminal to four, as well as an LNG storage tank, a condensate tank, a loading berth and expanded utility and processing systems. LNG Canada said the terminal additions will build on the site and infrastructure created for Phase 1. The project also requires more capacity on the Coastal GasLink pipeline, which transports natural gas to Kitimat. LNG Canada said five compressor stations will be built for the expansion. TC Energy, which operates the pipeline, separately announced plans to nearly double its capacity through new compressor stations and facility upgrades. LNG Canada will lead construction of the terminal expansion, while Coastal GasLink will remain the pipeline’s owner, operator and permit holder.
