Liberals sweep 3 byelections, bolstering Carney's trade stance

Published 1 September 2026

Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberal Party swept three federal byelections on September 1, 2026, in a decisive show of support for his government's handling of an escalating trade war with the United States. The victories, which included flipping a Conservative seat in Quebec, bolstered the Liberal majority in Parliament and delivered a significant blow to the opposition Conservatives under leader Pierre Poilievre. The most dramatic result came in the Quebec riding of Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, where Liberal candidate Daniel Gobeil, a former head of the province's dairy producers association, won with 51.3% of the vote. The seat had been held by the Conservatives since 2018.
