Lewis charged in shooting that killed Philadelphia officer
Philadelphia officials say Eric Lewis has been arrested and charged in connection with a shooting that killed Officer Shane Seiber and wounded another officer in West Philadelphia early Saturday. Lewis faces numerous charges, including murder and attempted murder; the allegations have not been tested at trial. The second officer was shot 12 times and remained hospitalized in stable condition, Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said. The shooting has renewed scrutiny of an earlier murder case against Lewis, who was acquitted in 2023 after a judge found him not guilty in the 2019 killing of Christopher Williams. District Attorney Larry Krasner said investigative failures and police misconduct undermined that prosecution. The current charges against Lewis are separate from the earlier case. Krasner said one officer involved in the Williams investigation had been in a relationship with Lewis’s sister and gave false information about a purported suspect called “Spice.” According to Krasner, the officer later admitted making up the account. He also described other alleged failures, including false paperwork about investigative steps.
