Lara calls for Khan's proper medical care

Published 6 September 2026

West Indies cricket legend Brian Lara has publicly called for imprisoned former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to receive proper, independent medical care and be treated with dignity. In a statement posted on his official Instagram account on September 5, 2026, Lara expressed deep concern over the treatment of the 73-year-old, who has been incarcerated since 2023. Lara emphasized that his appeal was a humanitarian matter, not a political one. "This isn't politics. It's basic humanity for a legend of our game," he stated. He noted that while he and Khan only crossed paths on the cricket field a handful of times, the respect he had for him was "instant and lasting." Lara said he was struggling to understand how someone who was once a "beacon of hope, pride and inspiration" for Pakistan could now be in a situation where he was not being cared for with the compassion and dignity he deserves. The former West Indies captain said he stood with fellow former cricket captains in their request for Khan to receive appropriate medical treatment. This statement adds Lara's voice to a growing chorus of concern from the international cricket community.
