Lane Johnson retires from NFL during 2026 season

Published 6 October 2026

Philadelphia Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson announced his retirement on Tuesday, ending his NFL career during the 2026 season after playing the team’s first three games. Johnson said in a social-media statement that his family priorities had changed and that focusing on his mental health was critical to his decision. Johnson, who had indicated the season would likely be his last, said he had wanted to play one more year but decided after reflection that it was time to leave football. He also said he wanted to spend more time with his children and family. The Eagles had listed him as unavailable for their Week 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams for personal reasons; the team’s stated explanation does not establish further details about his absence or the timing of his retirement. The retirement leaves Philadelphia without a veteran starter at right tackle. Rookie Markel Bell filled in against the Rams, and reports identify him as the likely replacement, though the team has not confirmed a longer-term lineup decision. Philadelphia is scheduled to play Jacksonville next, with Bell expected to step into Johnson’s role. The Eagles selected Johnson fourth overall in the 2013 draft.
