Karnataka school ceiling collapse leads to safety audit

Published 5 September 2026

Six students sustained injuries when a portion of a concrete ceiling collapsed during class hours at a government primary school in Karnataka's Bagalkote district on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. The incident occurred at the Mugalolli Tanda Government Primary School while students were attending lessons. The injured students were immediately taken to a local hospital and later transferred to Bagalkot District Hospital. Their injuries were reported to be minor, though one student remained under observation for a head injury. Following the collapse, the Lokayukta initiated suo motu proceedings on Thursday, September 3, 2026, ordering a wider inspection of government schools in Bagalkote district. The Lokayukta directed that classes must not be conducted in any part of a school building found to be unsafe and instructed its police wing to conduct random inspections. The Education Department has also been tasked with undertaking a comprehensive safety audit of all schools in the district, addressing concerns over the dilapidated state of school buildings.
