Journey Drummer Deen Castronovo Taken to Hospital
Journey drummer Deen Castronovo was taken to a hospital after becoming unwell during the band’s Thursday night concert in Tulsa, Oklahoma, prompting a pause before the show resumed with drum technician Steve Toomey on drums. His condition was not confirmed in reports available Friday, and the band had not established whether he would perform at its next show. Castronovo was helped offstage after Journey had played two songs at the BOK Center. Keyboardist Jonathan Cain told the audience there had been an issue and asked them to keep Castronovo in their thoughts as the band assessed what to do. The concert paused for about 20 minutes. Guitarist Neal Schon later told the crowd Castronovo was going to the hospital and that Toomey would fill in. The band then returned to the stage and completed the concert with Toomey playing drums. Schon dedicated the performance to Castronovo and said he thought the drummer would be fine. Singer Arnel Pineda also expressed optimism during the show, joking that Castronovo had consumed too much Gatorade. Those comments did not provide a verified account of what caused Castronovo to become unwell.
