Johnson weighs future if Republicans lose House

Published 9 October 2026

House Speaker Mike Johnson said he has not decided what he would do if Republicans lose control of the House in the November 3 midterm elections, describing a possible return to Shreveport, Louisiana, and a lawn-care business as one option. In a Fox News interview, Johnson said he did not know what his next chapter would be if Republicans lost their majority. He said he would consider returning to his hometown and starting a lawn business if he believed that was the right path. His remarks described a possibility, not a decision to leave Congress or politics. Johnson said his focus remained on protecting the Republican majority. He also rejected responsibility for a possible defeat, saying the party would lose the House because voters had been misled. The comments came as voters in some states had begun casting early ballots ahead of Election Day. The House outcome remains uncertain. A Reuters/Ipsos poll cited in reports found that 44% of registered voters said they would support Democrats, compared with 37% for Republicans, while 13% were undecided. Those figures reflect voter preferences at the time of the poll, not election results.
