The actress and former professional dancer, who is partnered with pro Val Chmerkovskiy for the new season, said she is essentially learning a new discipline. The backlash emerged after the full cast was announced on September 2, 2026, on "Good Morning America." Dewan, 45, began her career as a backup dancer for artists including Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera, and Missy Elliott before her acting breakthrough in the 2006 film "Step Up." She has also hosted the dance competition show "World of Dance" and served as a judge on other dance programs. Some viewers questioned whether her prior experience gave her an unfair edge over celebrities with little to no formal dance training. In response, Dewan emphasized that ballroom dancing is a distinct style. "I do not know how to ballroom dance. Let's be clear. It's two different languages," she told Entertainment Weekly.
