Jed Mercurio’s Hat Trick Mercurio bids to produce Doctor Who

Published 8 October 2026

Hat Trick Mercurio has submitted a proposal to produce the next iteration of Doctor Who, with writer and producer Jed Mercurio attached as an executive producer, according to reports about the BBC’s tender process. The submission is a bid, not a confirmed appointment, and the BBC has not selected a producing partner. The BBC invited production companies to compete for the work, with proposals due by October 2, 2026. The tender is for a multiepisode series, including specials. The BBC’s tender document says it aims to choose a producing partner by March 2027, with the series intended for broadcast in 2028-2029. The broadcaster declined to comment, and Hat Trick Mercurio did not respond to a request for comment. The reports say Mercurio would be an executive producer if the proposal advances, but his eventual role has not been established. It is also unclear what creative approach the company has proposed. A shortlisted group is expected to be asked for an editorial outline, a step that would give the BBC more detail about each candidate’s vision before it makes a decision. Other production companies are also pursuing the contract.
