JCR Upgrades India Sovereign Rating to A-

Published 5 September 2026

Japan Credit Rating Agency (JCR) has upgraded India's sovereign credit rating by one notch to A from BBB, marking the highest rating India has received from any agency. The upgrade, announced on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, reflects the agency's assessment of India's strong economic growth, improved fiscal quality, and a strengthening financial system. The Ministry of Finance welcomed the development, stating it underscores the continued strengthening of India's economic fundamentals amidst a challenging global environment. A higher credit rating is expected to lower borrowing costs for the government and boost investor confidence by signaling a reduced risk of financial default. JCR cited India's sustained high economic growth rate of around 7 percent, driven by robust private consumption and public investment, as a key factor. The agency also recognized the government's consistent implementation of policies conducive to productivity growth and economic development. These include the development of digital public infrastructure and the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which have strengthened the country's economic foundations.
