Islamabad HC orders end to solitary confinement for Khan, Bibi

The Islamabad High Court has directed jail authorities to end the solitary confinement of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, ruling that their detention conditions must respect fundamental rights to human dignity. In a written verdict issued on September 1, 2026, the court ordered that the couple, currently held at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, should not be subjected to unnecessary social isolation while maintaining necessary security protocols. Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro announced the verdict, holding that petitions challenging the alleged isolation were maintainable. The court directed that Khan and Bibi be allowed meetings with family members as permitted under jail rules and that arrangements be made for telephone conversations between Khan and his sons, who reside abroad. Authorities were also ordered to provide Khan with newspapers and books daily and ensure he receives medical facilities in accordance with prison regulations. The Adiala jail superintendent was instructed to implement these directions and submit a compliance report within 15 days.
