Iraola updates on Barcola Gakpo fitness

Published 9 September 2026

Liverpool secured a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday evening, staging a comeback after falling behind early in the match. Marcos Llorente opened the scoring for the visitors, but Liverpool responded with goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister to claim the win. Manager Andoni Iraola provided updates on several players following the game, most notably easing concerns over forward Bradley Barcola. Barcola was substituted in the 60th minute, leading to fears of a potential injury after he signaled to the bench and was seen holding his calf. However, Iraola clarified that the player was experiencing cramp rather than a muscular issue. "It was just cramps, especially with Bradley Barcola," Iraola stated. "We are rushing him, he hasn't played any minutes in preseason, but today we decided to ask him to give everything he had." He added that the club is carefully managing the summer signing's physical condition, noting that Barcola had not played in Paris Saint-Germain’s preseason. Despite not scoring on his debut, Barcola created two clear chances against the Atletico goalkeeper, which Iraola viewed positively.
