IonQ Unveils Superion 256 Quantum Computer, Opens Orders

Quantum computing company IonQ announced Tuesday the unveiling of its Superion 256 system, a new trapped-ion quantum computer designed for mass production and data center integration. The company is now accepting orders for the system, with customer deliveries slated to begin in 2027. IonQ is emphasizing its strategy of leveraging semiconductor manufacturing techniques through its recently acquired subsidiary, SkyWater Technology, to scale production and reduce costs. IonQ stated that SkyWater has fabricated the initial 256-qubit processors, and prototypes have successfully trapped the first ions. The company highlighted that integrated electronic controls built directly into the chips shorten design cycles and support ambitions for batch production, moving away from traditional, one-off quantum computer builds. IonQ Chairman and CEO Niccolo de Masi noted that quantum computing, like classical computing, ultimately scales most powerfully on a semiconductor foundation, positioning Superion as the first platform designed for production in the hundreds. In parallel with the Superion 256, IonQ is developing the Superion 10K system.
