India women unbeaten, men stunned by Iran at Asian Games

India's women's table tennis team stayed unbeaten at the Asian Games 2026 on Sunday, September 20, staging a comeback to beat Singapore 3-2, while the men's team suffered a surprise 0-3 defeat to Iran after opening with a win. Both Indian teams had begun their Group F campaigns with identical 3-0 victories over Indonesia earlier in the day, played at Sky Hall Toyota in Toyota City. In the women's event, India first swept Indonesia 3-0. Sreeja Akula beat Ni Maharani 3-1, Diya Chitale defeated Almaira Nebuchadnezzar 3-0, and Yashaswini Ghorpade overcame Citra Rasmi 3-0 to seal the tie. The second match of the day against Singapore proved far tougher. Yashaswini gave India the lead by beating world No. 47 Jian Zeng 3-1, but teenager Loy Ming outlasted Sreeja 3-2 and Diya Chitale fell 1-3 to Tan Zhao, leaving Singapore ahead 2-1. Sreeja responded in the fourth match, defeating Jian Zeng 3-1 to level the tie, and Yashaswini held her nerve in the decider, edging Loy Ming 3-2 in a tight five-game contest to complete the comeback and keep India's record intact.
