India Retains Chess Olympiad Trophy With Silver and Bronze

India retained the Nona Gaprindashvili Trophy at the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, after its Open team won silver and its women’s team took bronze. The combined result gave India the trophy for a third consecutive Olympiad, following its wins in 2022 and 2024. In the final round on September 27, India’s Open team drew 2-2 with Hungary, finishing second behind hosts Uzbekistan. India and Germany both ended the Open competition with 18 match points, and India took silver on the applicable tiebreak. Uzbekistan won gold, while Germany finished third. The match against Hungary included a win for Arjun Erigaisi over Peter Leko and a loss for D. Gukesh to Gleb Dudin. R. Praggnanandhaa and Nihal Sarin drew their games, leaving the teams level. Uzbekistan secured the Open title by defeating Ukraine in the final round. India’s women also drew 2-2 in their final match, against Georgia, to claim bronze.
