India Probes Apple Over iOS 18 Warranty Policy After Damage Complaints

Published 15 September 2026

India's consumer regulator has escalated its investigation into Apple's software warranty policy following complaints that the iOS 18 update caused damage to iPhones. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) ordered a detailed probe on July 29, 2026, after receiving numerous consumer reports that the software rollout led to screen display and microphone malfunctions. The regulator alleges that Apple violated consumer rights by charging users for repairs stemming from its own software upgrade, calling it a breach of fair trade principles. The investigation covers specific complaints that green, pink, or white lines appeared on iPhone screens after the iOS 18 installation, forcing customers to pay what the CCPA described as "exorbitant amounts" for display replacements. Apple has disputed the accusations, stating in an August letter to investigators that it found no systemic issues or safety concerns with iOS 18 in India. The company argued that its policy of not providing warranties for software aligns with global industry standards and is similar to practices by other electronics manufacturers.
