India Passenger Vehicle Sales Surge 35% in August 2026

India's passenger vehicle sales surged approximately 35 percent in August 2026, driven by robust demand, new model launches, and favorable market sentiment ahead of the festive season. Industry estimates place total domestic wholesales at around 450,000 units, a significant increase from approximately 330,000 units in August 2025. The growth was broad-based, with nearly all major manufacturers reporting double-digit gains, except for Toyota Kirloskar Motor. Market leader Maruti Suzuki India reported a 35 percent year-on-year increase in domestic dispatches, reaching 176,971 units compared to 131,278 units in the same month last year. The company attributed its performance to strong demand across its portfolio, particularly its CNG models, and noted pending bookings of nearly 180,000 units at the end of August, with the newly launched Brezza compact SUV accounting for 30,000 of those. "The three tailwinds are there. One is the GST 2.0, other is the repo rate reduction, which led to the reduction in the EMI, and the third thing was the income tax exemption on incomes up to Rs 12 lakh," said Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer for Marketing and Sales at MSIL.
