India names T20I squad for Afghanistan series with four players subject to fitness

Published 2 September 2026

The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced a 15-member squad for a historic three-match T20 International series against Afghanistan on September 1, 2026, with the notable caveat that four key players, including pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, are subject to final fitness clearance. The series, scheduled to begin on September 13 in New Delhi, will be led by captain Shreyas Iyer with Tilak Varma as vice-captain. The squad sees the return of several senior players who missed the recent tour of Zimbabwe, including wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson and the pace trio of Bumrah, Harshit Rana, and Arshdeep Singh. However, the availability of Bumrah, Rana, all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, and spinner Washington Sundar is conditional. This marks the second consecutive squad announcement where players have been named despite not being fully fit, a practice that has drawn scrutiny. The conditional selections stem from a recent pattern of injuries and late withdrawals that have plagued the team.
