India mandates BIS certification for screen protectors

India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has brought smartphone screen protectors under mandatory Bureau of Indian Standards registration, requiring compliance with Indian Standard IS 193482025 from April 1, 2027. The requirement was set out in a notification dated September 21, 2026, issued under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, and amending the compulsory registration order of 2021. Screen protectors for smartphones are the 66th item added to the compulsory registration schedule, which already covers products such as smartphones, laptops, chargers, LED televisions, microwave ovens, printers and set-top boxes. From April 1, 2027, manufacturers and importers must ensure that every screen protector sold in India meets IS 193482025 before it can be marketed. The standard sets specifications and testing requirements covering glass size, strength, surface quality, light transmission and visible defects, as well as features including adhesive, anti-shatter film, oleophobic coating, anti-glare treatment, blue-light filtering and privacy films. Packaging must display the manufacturer's name, batch number and screen protector thickness.
