India Hosts BRICS Summit, Modi Calls for Global South Reforms

India is hosting the 2026 BRICS summit in New Delhi, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasizing the bloc's role as a cooperative platform for the Global South rather than a group opposed to the West. The two-day summit, running from September 12 to 13, 2026, marks the 20th anniversary of the grouping, which now includes 11 member countries. In his welcome address at the Bharat Mandapam venue, Modi outlined India's priorities for its chairmanship, which operates under the theme "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability." He stressed that BRICS is "not against anyone" but aims to take everyone along, positioning the bloc as a forum for dialogue and cooperation among emerging economies. Modi proposed a new institutional framework to ensure continuity in BRICS decision-making despite the annual rotation of the presidency. He suggested a Troika mechanism involving past, present, and future presidencies, along with a secure digital repository to track decisions, obligations, and implementation timelines.
