India Cabinet Approves ₹10,000-Crore SME Growth Fund

Published 6 October 2026

India’s Union Cabinet approved a government commitment of ₹10,000 crore to establish an SME Growth Fund, a programme intended to provide long-term equity capital to small and medium enterprises seeking to expand. The decision was taken on October 6, 2026, at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to government statements. The fund is designed to address what the government describes as a shortage of growth-stage equity for established businesses. Existing equity programmes, officials said, largely support early-stage ventures and microenterprises, leaving some viable small and medium enterprises with limited access to patient capital as they scale. The government says the fund will support businesses with demonstrated viability and potential for expansion. It is intended to help them increase capacity, invest in technology, expand internationally, undertake strategic investments and strengthen their position in supply chains. These are stated aims; the reports do not establish that the commitment has been disbursed or that investments have begun.
