Maharashtra Orders Minimum 10% Water Cut From October 16

Published 6 October 2026

Maharashtra’s government has directed urban and rural local bodies to impose a minimum 10% cut in water supply beginning October 16, 2026, as the state plans for deficient monsoon rainfall and possible drought conditions. Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan said drinking water would receive the highest priority, with supplies planned through August 31, 2027. The directive applies to municipal corporations, municipalities and gram panchayats. The government said it had assessed available water dam by dam and by use, taking into account evaporation, silt buildup and unauthorized extraction. It also plans to retain an additional 10% emergency water buffer in each dam or reservoir, according to Mahajan’s announcement. Local bodies have been instructed to prevent leaks and operate sewage treatment plants at full capacity. Treated wastewater is to be used for gardening, construction and washing. Industries have been directed to reuse or recycle at least 30% of their water intake.
