India asks UN rights office for report on Kashmir

Published 15 October 2026

India’s representative at the United Nations called on the human rights office to report on Pakistan’s response to alleged violations in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, including killings, detentions of protest leaders and restrictions on internet access. Anuj Swarup, a first secretary at India’s UN mission, made the request during the General Assembly’s Third Committee session on October 14 or 15. He urged the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to address what India described as abuses and asked what steps Pakistan had taken in response to the office’s concerns. The supplied accounts place his remarks at the session but differ on the precise day; the request itself is reported consistently. Swarup called for impartial investigations into deaths linked to unrest, due process and legal access for detained leaders of the Joint Awami Action Committee, and the restoration of internet access across the territory. He also urged political dialogue to address local grievances. These were requests made by India; the material does not establish that OHCHR plans to issue a new report or what any report would conclude.
