Argentina Seeks ITLOS Halt to Sea Lion Oil Project
Argentina has asked the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea to impose urgent provisional measures aimed at stopping oil development in the North Falkland Basin while arbitration over the dispute proceeds. The request concerns the Sea Lion project, which Argentina says would exploit hydrocarbons on its continental shelf without its consent. Argentina’s presidential office announced the filing on October 13, saying it seeks to prevent the United Kingdom from authorizing production and to preserve Argentina’s claimed rights. The government said its application forms part of arbitration proceedings initiated on September 28 under Annex VII of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno outlined the measures Argentina is seeking, including preventing oil and gas production, restricting the use of information obtained during exploration, protecting the marine environment and preventing further steps that could escalate the dispute, such as additional drilling permits. The filing seeks interim measures, not a decision on sovereignty.
