India Approves Rs 20,804 Crore Railway Expansion Projects

The Union Cabinet has approved eight railway multitracking projects spanning approximately 1,196 kilometers across nine states, with an estimated cost of Rs 20,804 crore. The initiative aims to decongest high-density railway networks, enhance operational efficiency, and increase freight capacity. The approved projects are part of a broader strategy to improve multimodal connectivity and logistics efficiency under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. These projects are expected to streamline operations, reduce delays, and lower the country's logistics costs. A significant portion of the investment, Rs 10,021 crore, is allocated to five projects in southern states: Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana. These southern projects will cover about 540 kilometers and are designed to improve connectivity to approximately 2,121 villages, serving a population of around 52 lakh people. Officials project these enhancements will enable an additional 47 million tonnes of annual freight capacity. Specific projects within the southern package include the 110-kilometer multitracking between Ghatkesar and Kazipet in Telangana, planned for completion by 2029-30.
