Imran Khan to Challenge Notice Requiring Him to Leave India

Published 15 October 2026

Actor Imran Khan plans to challenge a Foreigners Regional Registration Office notice requiring him to leave India by October 28, after he was detained at a protest in Mumbai. His lawyers said on October 15 that they were preparing a petition for the Bombay High Court; the reports do not confirm that it has been filed or considered by the court. The notice alleges that Khan violated the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, by taking part in an October 10 demonstration at August Kranti Maidan. The protest concerned Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and was linked in reports to agitation over the Special Intensive Revision issue. The FRRO notice gives Khan until October 28 to leave India. Khan’s lawyers said they expected to file the challenge shortly after October 15 and planned to seek an urgent hearing. Once filed, the petition is expected to be placed before a Bombay High Court division bench. The proposed plea argues that no law or rule bars Overseas Citizen of India cardholders from participating in protests. That is the argument attributed to the planned petition, not a court ruling on the law or Khan’s conduct.
